Based on the directive of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud it has been decided to proceed with the separation of the Iraqi Conjoined twins, Ayad & Zeyad on 25 October 2008, with the rehearsal procedure to take place on 22 October 2008 at 1400 hrs, as stated by Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Head of the Multidisciplinary Surgical Team. The operation is expected to last for 15 hours and 8 phases. The surgical team is comprised of 30 people. There will be four physicians coming in from the Al-Khansaa Teaching Hospital, Mosul, Iraq to observe the procedure, as well as Saudi medical and nursing students who will participate in this surgery.
The twins are joined in the lower part of the thoracic and abdomen, sharing the lower part of the chest wall and the abdominal wall. They also share the liver and small bowel with the possibility of sharing the perichordium as well.
