Based on the directive of the
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud the conjoined twins attached at the head (craniopagus) were successfully separated at
King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh on Saturday, 27 October 2007 in an operation lasting 18 hours. The operation was carried out in 7 phases by 22 members from specialties in Neuro Surgery, Anesthesia, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Nursing and technicians. The Multidisciplinary team included 60 members. The rehearsal procedure was conducted on Wednesday, 24 October 2007.
Four days after the successful separation of the Omani conjoined twins, Safa and Marwa both twins are now completely stable without any complications. Both twins are breathing normally and all vital organs are stable including their heart, lungs and nervous system. Their movements and interaction to their surroundings is normal.
