The Omani twins were received at King Khalid International Airport by the First Secretary and Consul of the Omani Embassy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Director of Public Relations and Media Affairs, National Guard Health Affairs Mr. Sami bin Orance Al Shaalan. Upon arrival, the twins were taken by ambulance to King Abdulaziz Medical City. The twins were met at the hospital by Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Chief Executive Officer, National Guard Health Affairs and Head of the Medical and Surgical Team for the separation of conjoined twins. Dr. Al Rabeeah then accompanied the twins to the Pediatric Ward and carried out preliminary examinations on them.
After the preliminary examination of the two children, Dr. Al Rabeeah stated that the twins were joined at the head area and that it would be possible to carry out the separation. However, he stressed that it was important to conduct further detailed examinations in order to determine the depth of the adhesion and the extent of participation in blood vessels and brain membranes. It should be noted that previous examinations revealed that the adhesion was in the scalp, skull bones and the outer membranes of the brain.
It is worth mentioning that King Abdulaziz Medical City-Riyadh has already performed 12 successful twin separation operations making it a center renowned for this type of intricate surgery. Owing to this successful record and the highly skilled staff and advanced technical resources at KAMC, many patients with similar conditions from the Kingdom and abroad have sought treatment at KAMC.
